The next morning when Cove awoke, it was to a cold house and no fire. Although, when he felt Lottie cuddled up next to him, his heart warmed and he smiled. Not wanting to wake anyone, but knowing he needed to get the fire going again, he slowly moved the covers and stood up.
âHmm? Whatâs that?â Lottieâs groggy voice alerted Cove to the fact that he hadnât done a very good job of not disturbing her sleep.
âShhh, go back to sleep. Iâm just going to get the fire going again.â With a log in one hand and some kindling in the other, Cove got to work and had the fire roaring in no time. He stood there by the fireplace for a few more minutes to ensure that it really was going and wouldnât go out before he retook his place on the couch.
When he turned around to head back to the sofa, he noticed Lottie watching him. âGood morning.â
âGood morning. Howâd you sleep?â She gave him a warm smile.
Cove took in her mussed-up hair and knew then and there that she was the most beautiful woman heâd ever seen. It didnât matter that her hair was a mess and she had on no makeup; she was perfect.
âPretty good, all things considered.â Lottie looked around and realized they had closed the blinds last night in an effort to keep out some of the cold. None of the lights were on, but that didnât mean anything. It was possible that the power was back, and since they turned everything off they may not realize it yet. âDo you think we have power?â
Cove walked over to the window and peered out. âNope. The street lights are still off and I donât see any lights on anywhere on the street.â
âCare for coffee? With the generator, I can probably whip us up some breakfast and coffee.â When a gurgling sound emanated from her stomach, Lottie put a hand over it and blushed.
Cove chuckled lightly, not wanting to wake up Quinn. âThat would be great. Do you need any help?â
âI could use some, sure. Just let me get Quinn resituated and then Iâll see what we have.â She had ensured the generator covered their fridge and a few kitchen outlets, so she knew she could at the very least pull out her griddle and make bacon and eggs. If she made the coffee and then unplugged it to plug in the toaster, she could also get some toast for them.
Some folks had whole-home generators, but since she rarely lost power for long, she didnât need one. Hers only worked on a small amount of outlets at a time. And seeing as how ensuring their food stores stayed fresh was the most important thing, only the plugs near the fridge were covered by the generator. And the hot water heater.
Once Lottie had breakfast made, Cove went in and woke up Quinn, who was already in the process of waking up. âGood morning, Uncle Cove. Is that bacon I smell?â
âIt sure is.
